Charles Bernard
Fuller
Sep 24, 1946 — May 16, 2024
Henderson
Charles Bernard Fuller was born into this world with his twin sister, Charlotte, on September 24th, 1946 to the late Luther 'Luke' Hampton Fuller and Mary Eaton Fuller of the Old County Home Road Community in Henderson, North Carolina known at that time as Mobile. He was married from 1975 until her passing in 2021 to the late Bermadine Spruill Fuller. Together, they raised a loving family.
Charles was educated in Vance County schools and graduated from Henderson Institute in 1965. He served as captain of the football team and manager for the baseball team while in high school while working odd jobs and driving the school bus with his younger siblings and niece onboard. Shortly after graduating, Charles enlisted in the United States Army. He served honorably from 1966-1968 in an elite army unit of Atomic Demolition Specialists at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri and later became the instructor. The unit was trained to advance, arm and deploy atomic munitions behind enemy lines and knew that their missions were potentially fatal. He attended Atomic Demolition School at Fort Belvoir in Virginia and Non-Commissioned Officer School at Fort Knox, Kentucky. Within fourteen months, Charles achieved the rank of Sergeant (E5). Charles was heavily encouraged to become a drill sergeant but declined.
While attending accounting school in Greensboro, Charles also served in the Alabama National Guard known at that time as the Alabama Militia where he earned the rank of Honorary Lieutenant Colonel in 1975.
That same year, Charles would also meet and marry his wife, Bermadine of the Flat Rock Satterwhite Point Road Community. They married and resided in College Park, Georgia before moving back to Henderson. Two years later, they would welcome Bermadine's youngest siblings Brian 'Poochie' Spruill and Annette Spruill into their home. They soon had two children to their union - JaBron and Charmaine.
Charles was a lifelong long distance truck driver known as Candyman. He worked from the early 1970s through mid-1990s as a driver for Roses Stores, Inc. with his lifelong best friend Stanley "Mack" Fogg before transitioning to several other cross-country carriers. He finally retired from his last company Credence Trucking - in May 2023.
He was preceded in death by his seven siblings Luther 'Lindbergh' Jr, Dot, Barbara, James, John, Moses and Doris.
He leaves the cherish his memories, his two children, JaBron Fuller (Ingrid) of Henderson, North Carolina and Charmaine Fuller Cooper (Thomas) of Blythewood, South Carolina; four grandchildren, Jelijah Fuller of Henderson, North Carolina, Jabria Fuller of Charlotte, North Carolina, Luke Charleston Cooper and Savannah Cooper both of Blythewood, South Carolina. ; four devoted siblings, Lois Fraser of Maryland, Charlotte Carter of Maricopa, Arizona, Bettie Strong (Arthur) of Stone Mountain, Georgia and Arthur Fuller (Linda) of West Hills, California; one close cousin raised as a brother James Thomas 'Tom' Brown of Henderson, North Carolina; sisters-in-law Martha Fuller of Topeka, Kansas, Gwen Fuller of Greensboro, North Carolina, Sabrina Spruill Tinsley of Tampa, Florida, Juanita Spruill Smith of Bellport, New York, Annette Downey (Bobby) of Henderson, North Carolina ; brothers-in-law, Ray Spruill (Doris) of Bellport, New York, John Spruill (Lorna) of Whitby, Ontario, Canada, Curtis Spruill (Dorothy) of Riverhead, New York, and Brian Spruill (KeKe) of Dallas, North Carolina and a hosts of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Charles lived, loved, led and he provided. He loved his children and grandchildren deeply. His children, siblings, extended family and friends will miss him, but he is deep in our hearts. Charles was a talented problem solver who could fix or build just about anything, loved being outside and was always active. He was a tall, charismatic, no nonsense hardworking man, with a booming southern voice with a regal tone, a giant laugh and truly one of a kind.
